A decision had been made by FIFA two years earlier in 1928 that a tournament be created for all its members and hence the World Cup was born. It was decided that Uruguay, as Olympic champions and the era's footballing superpower, should celebrate 100 years of independence by hosting the illustrious tournament.

Many European teams did not compete in the tournament, citing the three week voyage to Uruguay as prohibitive. The home nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales all were ineligible for the competition having withdrawn from FIFA membership because of disputes over amateur player payments.

Jules Rimet, the Fifa president and brains behind the World Cup, presented the trophy to the winning Uruguayan captain Jose Nazassi and football's greatest tournament was born.

This fine print epitomises the era with its art-deco design. As the first official World Cup poster ever commissioned it is a wonderful addition to any collection.
